A gap into the future: IBM strikes back No. 2

The improvement came really soon - over the next five years, the IBM System / 360 was released, bearing the proud titles: the first universal PC and the first computer with byte memory addressing, the founder of the mainframe as a class. By the way, dinosaurs compatible with System/360 are still being released to this day - an absolute record! Promoting the creation of both a floppy disk and a commercial hard drive is also the work of these craftsmen.

Wise investment activity, together with a marketing campaign and full-fledged service support, allowed IBM to quickly gain a dominant position. I didn't pay attention to the industry of familiar PCs until 1981, when I introduced IBM Personal Computer, the future industrial standard. 640 kilobytes of RAM, 1-2 floppy drives and DOS from Microsoft... oh, those evil 80s! The cooperation with IBM greatly discouraged the Mikes, although it was a well-deserved glory - Microsoft provided a unique offer at that time to simultaneously buy a software license for an unlimited number of PCs for a one-time attractive fee. It's hard to imagine, but at the beginning the NK project was listed as a side project: only 4 people were involved in the development of the machine under the leadership of Philip Donald Estridge. Even more strange is the lack of a patent for both DOS (with a BASIC interpreter) and another truly innovative component by that time, the BIOS!

Perhaps it was these important omissions in the intellectual property policy, or perhaps the massiveness of the corporation did not allow it to immediately adapt to the needs of the market and develop the concept of its premiere model, which was later used by smaller and more flexible firms - Apple, DEC, Intel, Microsoft, Compaq, taking a good share of the profits.

1990-2000 was a time of reassessment of values - numerous layoffs, changes in the profile of production in an attempt to adapt to the modern technological pace. In 1993, IBM suffered losses of $80,000,000, the largest in American corporate history at the time. Before that, the giant was buried alive in almost every economic review, and the shares broke through another bottom on the trading exchange. In 2003, the corporation gathered all its dedicated employees (no less than 50,000 souls) and organized a three-day online discussion on key business aspects, which resulted in the beginning of structural changes and a new era of service delivery, with an emphasis primarily on consulting. Since the early 2000s, it has been actively cooperating with AMD in the production of processors and server equipment, and since 2015 it has been actively providing cloud IT services to Apple, leaving the development of supercomputer fillings entirely.
